1 (9 inch) deep dish pie crust (I do make my own for this pie but store bought crust is excellent with this recipe)
5 cups apples – peeled, cored and thinly sliced
1/2 cup white sugar
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/3 cup white sugar
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
6 tablespoons butter
/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)


Preheat oven to 400 degrees F

Do not bake the pie shell. Place the apples in the bottom of the pie shell, arrange evenly to cover the bottom.

In a mixing bowl, mix 1/2 cup sugar, the cinnamon and 1/4 cup of the chopped walnuts (if using). Sprinkle this mixture over the top of the arranged apples.

In the same mixing bowl, mix 1/3 cup sugar with flour; cut in butter until crumbly. Spoon mixture over apples. Top with the rest of the walnuts if desired.

Bake for about 40 minutes or until the apples are soft and the top is browned. Serve warm or cold with whipped cream or ice cream.
